"An Activist Was In The Lobby At The Time"

Some of this is second-hand information, so I recommend that journalists and interested parties go to the sources for quotes and details to verify it.

Background: The Citizens for a Responsible Whatever (Curriculum, Government, whatever) are campaigning for a referendum to throw out a new county law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity. Rather than argue the actual point having to do with discrimination, they have pretended that the new law will make it legal for male voyeurs and exhibitionists to go into women's restrooms, simply by claiming to be transgender. They need petition signatures and they aren't getting them.

Last Tuesday, Channel 7 News reported breathlessly that the new law had been "tested" when a man in a dress went into a ladies locker room at Rio Sport and Health Club in Gaithersburg. The Examiner also picked up the story. Both media outlets presented it in terms of the CRW's frame, as if this event had something to do with the new antidiscrimination law or tested it in some way. (Note that the law doesn't go into effect until February 19th.) Soon the rightwing web sites, starting with World Net Daily, were relaying the important information to their readers.

Last night a trustworthy friend of TTF had a discussion with a manager at the gym -- we will not use their name since it wasn't an official interview -- who said that there was "an activist" in the lobby of the gym at the time that this "man in a dress" went in. She described the activist as being like one of the people at the Giant grocery store with petitions [see previous post for some background on that].

According to this manager, the person in a dress signed in with a crowd of other guests so it is not clear who it was or if it was a man or a woman; they then proceeded directly to the ladies locker room, went into it and to the back of the room, and then came out and left the building. When this person came in, the employee at the door thought something strange was going on and called for an attendant to go check the ladies room, but the person left before they got there. Rio staff say they do not know who the person was.

The manager at Rio said she did not know who called the media, but she said the activist in the lobby was filmed in an interview after the event. The only "activist" interviewed by Channel 7 (the only media outlet indiscriminate enough to send a reporter to the scene) was Theresa Rickman of the CRW, who has written in our comments section that she goes to the Bethesda Sport and Health gym, not the one in Rio -- so why would she have been there? In its newscast, Channel 7 failed to mention Ms. Rickman's connection to the anti-gay, anti-transgender group, quoting her as if she were an ordinary citizen on the scene.

The manager at Rio told our friend, quote: "I think it was a publicity stunt."

I think it was a publicity stunt, too. The CRW needs signatures for their petition -- 12,500 of them by February 4th, and so far they say they have 3,000.

It does not appear that the women who were in the locker room at the time were in on the hoax; one of them went to management and asked them to call the police, and the manager explained that there really is no law against people going into the wrong bathroom -- there isn't now, never was, isn't one planned. The manager also made a point to our friend of noting that the Rio gym has a third bathroom that can be used by a transitioning transgender person, and she emphasized that the club has a policy of not discriminating. In fact they have had such a policy for a long time, long before this law was being discussed.

We also have seen an email from the Maryland Bureau Chief at Channel 7 saying:
... I must say I was offended by suggestions that this incident was fabricated by this group and that Channel 7 got sucked into reporting it as part of an "agenda." This is an affront to me professionally and not backed by any facts.

Nonetheless, I will not be relying on Channel 7 for my news. I guess they just might be a little under-skeptical for my tastes. Really, it would be a lot better for them to admit they screwed up here, to find out how this happened, and to correct the situation so that this sort of thing doesn't happen again, if they want to retain any credibility as a news source.

Just to get it on the record, it is worth re-emphasizing that it is not now illegal for a man to go into the ladies room or vice versa, but peeping is illegal. So whatever this person did was not against the law. Maryland Code, Criminal Law 3-901 and 3-902 prohibit "visual surveillance of another individual, with or without prurient interest, without the consent of that individual." Under this law, it doesn't matter if a woman is peeping at another woman, a man at a man, men at women, women at men, you just can't peep. You can't do it with your eyeballs, with a camera, with mirrors, with video cameras, and you can't do it if you're transgender, not-transgender, gay, ex-gay, or anything else. You can't do that. If the line in the ladies room goes out into the hall, a lady can use the men's room, if she doesn't peep. There is no law against it now, and prohibiting discrimination against transgender people won't change that.

The Citizens for a Responsible Government have given the Rio Sport and Health Club a bad name and brought them a lot of bad publicity with this hoax. They have made Channel 7 and The Examiner look like idiots, though of course it's their job as journalists to verify some things before they run a story. They frightened innocent citizens unnecessarily. How is this justified? They say they have "deep religious beliefs" that make it necessary for them to be able to discriminate against people who are subjectively a different gender from the one assigned to them at birth.

The fact is, they had to make up this incident because it wouldn't happen on its own. No transitioning transgender person is going to call attention to themselves in this way -- the Rio gym even has a third bathroom that a customer could use, just for that purpose -- and any voyeur who puts on a dress to go look at the women in the ladies locker room will be arrested. The CRW is campaigning on a lie, and they are desperate to make it seem real.

Teacher Man seems to have a way with store managers. It's odd that the store manager would describe a person that way. When did the gym manager see the activist at Giant?

"The Citizens for a Responsible Government have given the Rio Sport and Health Club a bad name and brought them a lot of bad publicity"

Is it possible they're changing their story because of that?

What are you so obsesses about? Are you afraid that this petition will get 9,000 more signatures? Afraid of the public actually getting a chance to vote on this?

Why was Theresa Rickman at the Rio Sport and Health Club at the precise day and time that the unconfirmed person entered the ladies locker room and why didn't Channel 7 do a little research and learn that she's an obsessive pro-discrimination referendum seeker?

Don't confuse Channel 7 "news"(or most media outlets) with journalism, facts, research or anything besides presenting as much sensationalism as possible to get advertising.

The CRW has been targeting Giants up county- they were at Kingsview Saturday(I know because I was there Sunday for a non-hateful reason and I was asked rather angrily if I had anything to do with "those people who hate gay people"- seems people go to the grocery store two days in a row).

Hey, Anon-

I did not go to the Rio Sport and Health nor do I have a membership there... so, sorry, I spoke with no manager there.

I only spoke with the manager at Giant to give him the facts of what these sickos were doing at his store. Once again, it was my civic and democratic duty to overturn your Red Neck Agenda by telling the store manager the truth.

You should have seen the look on the CRW's face when the manager asked her to leave... she knew she was lying and was caught. How sinful.

"Kelly Nicholson, general manager for the gym, said the person exited the locker room quickly and the gym could not verify that the incident had occurred. The offender has not been identified, and Nicholson said she questioned whether the person was actually transgendered." Anyone with an ounce of sense knows how ludicrous this claim is. A transgender woman at a gym wearing heavy make-up and a ruffled skirt? Give me a break. This is such an obvious hoax, perpetrated by people who don't have the facts on their side. Let's just say that her behavior with regard to the Montgomery County sex ed curriculum leaves Michelle Turner with approximately zero trustworthiness.

Oh, I'll admit, it does sounds suspicious if Theresa was there before the incident occurred but right now all of TTF's stories sound strange too. I keep thinking about this:

"She described the activist as being like one of the people at the Giant grocery store with petitions"

It sounds an awful lot like someone is putting words in this person's mouth. Seems like the personnel at the gym have had conflicting accounts. Not sure if anything happened at one point then later remembering what everyone around looked like and exactly what course the guy took in the locker room and what he did and how long it took.

What do you guys think will happen if this petition gets a vote on the ballot? I find it interesting when a group claims to be mainstream and to claim the loyalty of 98% of the local electorate and yet seems so determined not to have voters directly vote.

Isn't that quite suspicious?

Oh this is as clear as day now! At 1PM the stunt was pulled and in one hour, Theresa Rickman, who just happened to be at Rio that day (when she's a member of a Bethesda club) was interviewed by WJLA about it. The right wing Examiner reported, "The incident was publicized by the group, Citizens for a Responsible Government," but didn't report that Theresa Rickman of the CRG was at the club when the incident occurred. They swallowed her spin and reported it just as she laid it out for them, hook, line and sinker.

Is it possible they're changing their story

Let's see. Which story is changing?

Club officials say he is a male club member, but it's still unclear why he was dressed as a woman or why he didn't use a designated family restroom.

...Sport and Health's President Jonathan Adler, issued a statement Tuesday saying, "new laws represent new opportunities, and sport and health clubs will utilize this occasion to review our policies and procedures in Mongomery County with our legal counsel."

http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0108/488213.html

The health club admits the man is a member. The gym also has unisex, family restrooms, which the man ignored. The president of Sport and Health Clubs said in a statement that his company will review the new law with company lawyers.

http://wmal.com/Article.asp?id=550682&spid

Jonathan Adler, the president of Sport and Health, said the new law represents "new opportunities, and sport and health clubs will utilize this occasion to review our policies and procedures in Montgomery County with our legal counsel."

...

The club confirmed it already has a unisex changing room and that such transgender members are welcome to use that.

General Manager Kelly Nicholson-Glover said the club will keep its locker rooms segregated by sex, and it claims because it is membership-only it will not be affected by the new law, Bill 23-07, titled Non-Discrimination, Gender Identity.

http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=59733

Kelly Nicholson, general manager for the gym, said the person exited the locker room quickly and the gym could not verify that the incident had occurred. The offender has not been identified, and Nicholson said she questioned whether the person was actually transgendered.

She assured the safety of all gym members at Rio.

http://www.examiner.com/a-1163314~Transgender_bill_facing_new_round_of_opposition.html

Nope! It sounds like the club is saying the same thing they told the Examiner. Reports claiming the incident had occurred have not been verified by Rio. None of the media who gave reports about this incident asked what Theresa Rickman of the CRG -- a group that is actively protesting Bill 23-07 -- and who is not a member of Rio Sport and Health Club, was doing in Rio's lobby that day. Vigilance readers know Theresa has claimed to be a member of a different club.

Thank goodness TTF asked the questions the gullible press didn't bother to ask, the simple questions you learn in Journalism 101 (e.g., "What was a member of a group that opposes this bill doing in this club when this supposed event took place?"), and reported the answers to the public.

Now let's see if Theresa Rickman's story changes so her cohorts don't have to sin (You shall not bear false witness) like Michelle “Absolutely not. No ... We don’t know who this individual is other than what Rio has had to say about it” Turner.

Emproph is right. Rickman, Turner, CRC, CRG, CRWhatever -- they don't care about protecting women and girls. They just want to get enough signatures in time, no matter how they have to lie and cheat to do it.

I posted this before, but I think it bears repeating:

1982 - Researcher Paul Cameron tells the audience of the University of Nebraska Lutheran Church that a four-year-old boy was recently castrated due to a sexual attack by a gay man. Cameron told this story as part of an attempt to defeat an anti-discrimination law in Lincoln, NB. Police investigated and discovered the story to be false. But the anti-discrimination law was defeated.

2008 - Citizens for a Responsible Government, is a group putting together a petition against a law that would protect trangender Americans for discrimination. They claim that the law would allow male sexual predators to sneak into women’s lockerrooms and bathrooms. Weeks after their petition drive begins, an incident allegedly happens involving a man dressed as a woman entering the ladies room at a local gym. Gym officials say that they cannot verify whether or not the incident happened. Citizens for a Responsible Government, however, send out a “I told you so” email to its members.

I am not accusing the CRW of being behind the incident per se. But I find the parallel very interesting.

“Visual surveillance” is “peeping” and he certainly did not have the consent of that lady that was in the locker room. Who knows, maybe the police are working on catching this fake women. This should serve as a lesson to a man who thinks they can dress up as a women and go into the women’s locker room. Unless he is blind, keep his eyes closed or there is no one in there, he could be charged if any women in there feels threatened. Dutchy says this new law will not protect this fake women because this place is a private place.

We have no knowledge of, nor did we put anyone up to doing this.

We were in lobby when Greta was reporting on the story because we had gotten a call back on our robo calls that a man had entered a female lockerrooms from a resident who had received our message. We of course contacted the press. Turns out the press had gotten another report from a different individaul as well. They did their homework and investigated the incident. It was real.

A man dressed as a women, went into Rio club, swiped his card and came up as male. The guy at the desk saw him proceed into the ladies lockerroom. This was the day before the story, and to my knowledge, no one in my organization was anywhere in the vicinity. When the news crews decided to cover it the NEXT day, OF COURSE we went over to Rio.

Rio's health club, like Bethesda health club, have lots of naked people walking around ... at least a third maybe half. definitely half of the ladies in the steam room are naked. So clearly, this guy could have seen a lot. Anyone familar with an upscale health club would know that. Clearly the TTFs are not ....

I must say reading this blog is fascinating. We have one person from the CRC, CRW, CRG, CR(Whatever) posting under five different aliases. It’s the same person posting yet pretending to be someone different each time. I’m not sure who they think they are fooling as their writing style, tone, and thought process are exactly the same. This person has, in previous blog responses, gone under at least 20 different aliases. They then have the gall to discuss “truth”, Christianity, what’s best for children, biblical mandates against gays, transgenders, and anyone else that is not exactly like them. Claiming to have “truth” while disingenuously lying about their identity completely discredits them.

Ted posted that if it walks like a duck, looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck. That’s the take I have here. The similarities to a fake made up story are too similar and based on the past lies the group has told, their credibility has already been shot. Theresa of CRW(ackos) you should read the book, People of the Lie.

Does this sentence fit you Theresa?

The one that convinced me about the essentially indefensible nature of biblical infallibility was Henry VIII marriages. When Arthur died and Henry wanted a Spanish alliance, his lawyers found a passage which indicated that a man should marry his brother's widow. When Henry had enough of Catherine, his lawyers found another passage that indicated that such a marriage was in fact no marriage. There are passages that say that you should pray in private (which Baptists definitely don't do), and others that indicate you should proclaim to the world. Adulterer's should be stoned, adulterer's should be forgiven, you can't eat pork, you can eat pork, etc.

I remember as a middle schooler at bible camp discussing scriptural contradiction with my friends.

The fairy tale that society can tolerate homosexuality without consequence was shattered a quarter century ago by the AIDS crisis.

History looks to be repeating itself right now. It started just the same way back then with a few reports of similar cases of a rare disease occurring in places where toleration of homosexuality was at the maximum level.

I'm not saying the government should ban private behavior between adults but some public health measures might be advisable. Certainly society shouldn't be endorsing or participating in the normalization of gay promiscuity, at a minimum.

okay anonymous,

you need to be checked. no one knew who got AIDS first. true it got prominence when gays were infected but AIDS has been traced back to 1959 in the Belgian Congo -

http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/9802/03/earliest.aids/

and the last time i checked, HIV and AIDS infects more people than just gays.

and FURTHERMORE, that reference you made is to the MSRA infection and you are wrong again according to the CDC:

"The strains of MRSA described in the recent Annals of Internal Medicine have mostly been identified in certain groups of men who have sex with men (MSM), but have also been found in some persons who are not MSM. It is important to note that the groups of MSM in which these isolates have been described are not representative of all MSM, so conclusions can not be drawn about the prevalence of these strains among all MSM."

Maybe you should read something other than religious right press releases.

The issue isn't where the disease first appeared but how it spread. AIDS was able to spread easily through the U.S. because of rampant, random gay promiscuity.

It could be that this is not happening locally. I just said the county health department should look into it.

BTW, I first read the report from some secular news service. I don't generally read "religious right press releases".

no, AIDS can be spread through promiscuity, blood tranfusions, sharing needles. What you are doing now is blaming gays for AIDS. And we both know that there were other factors to the spread of AIDS other than those "nasty oversexed gay folks."

History teaches us that calamities do not happen in a vacuum and your attempt to make it seem that homosexuality is a "public health crisis" is incorrect on sooooo many levels.

BT, steps were taken to safeguard the blood supply and the war against drug abuse was fortified. Gays, however, crippled the health response system by refusing to support testing for all because of "civil rights" concerns. If you alive back then you surely remember this. Why shouldn't the same vigor we used to protect the blood supply and fight drug abuse be applied to gay promiscuity. Have no illusions: the tolerance of rampant, random, bareback gay promiscuity brought the AIDS plague to the U.S.

Now, the same seems true of this new disease. It's been popping up in recent years, especially in emergency rooms and it's been a mystery. The mystery may be solved now when in two totally distinct areas of the country the rate among gays is 13 times higher than the general. The only thing San Francisco and Boston have in common is the degree of gay tolerance.

It is the only responsible course of action to see if this problem also exists locally and, if so, how the government can fight and counter gay promiscuity.

There are alot of things that can be done to protect the general population.

I think the post said it was a possibility that needed to be investigated. It was true of AIDS and this is beginning to look similar.

It's striking that this is something that has been going around in hospitals and now in areas with large concentrations of gays. Fact is, anyone who works in an emergency room knows that gays visit the emergency room more than the average person. Between the nasty and stubborn infections and all the incidents of intestinal peforations, they spend more time at the hospital. Hence, since this disease seems more prevalent among gays and this disease seems to be surfacing in hospitals and since gays make more hospital visits than average, there may be a connection. It should be looked into and, hopefully, objectively, without a lot of pressure from radical fringe gay advocacy groups to skew results.

No action should be taken locally without facts but, in San Francisco, it looks like they should start looking at

About 85% of all invasive MRSA infections were associated with healthcare, and of those, about two-thirds occurred outside of the hospital, while about one third occurred during hospitalization.

About 14% of all the infections occurred in persons without obvious exposures to healthcare.

Although the rates of disease varied between the geographically diverse sites participating in the surveillance, overall rates of disease were consistently highest among older persons (age >65), Blacks, and males.

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_mrsa_Invasive_FS.html

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a prevalent nosocomial pathogen in the United States. In hospitals, the most important reservoirs of MRSA are infected or colonized patients. Although hospital personnel can serve as reservoirs for MRSA and may harbor the organism for many months, they have been more commonly identified as a link for transmission between colonized or infected patients. The main mode of transmission of MRSA is via hands (especially health care workers' hands) which may become contaminated by contact with a) colonized or infected patients, b) colonized or infected body sites of the personnel themselves, or c) devices, items, or environmental surfaces contaminated with body fluids containing MRSA. Standard Precautions, as described in the Guideline for Isolation Precautions: Preventing Transmissionof Infectious Agents in Healthcare Settings 2007 , should control the spread of MRSA in most instances. Additional measures for prevent the spread of MRSA are described in Management of Multidrug-Resistant Organisms in Healthcare Settings, 2006 PDF (234KB/74 pages)

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_mrsa_healthcareFS.html

Accept the FACTS Anon, MRSA is not a gay disease no matter how hard you try to spin it. Thanks to MTM for posting the NYTimes piece which included the CDC's view of MRSAs as well as an explanation of the comment that set the right wingers salivating about another bogus way to demonize gays:

One of the major sore points for some critics was a quote attributed to the report’s lead author, Bien Diep, a researcher who said he was concerned about “a potential spread of this strain into the general population.”

Mr. Diep, 29, said on Friday he regretted not being more thorough in communicating his research to reporters. He said that the term “general population” was part of medical jargon used in the report, which did not translate well.

“It’s really meant to be used to mean all inclusive, including the men-who-have-sex-with-men population,” he said.

Worries about the negative press resonated even as some gay men here expressed concern about the disease itself. The report looked at nine San Francisco hospitals in 2004 and 2005. A separate part of the study, conducted at an AIDS clinic in the city from 2004 to 2006, found that gay men were 13 times more likely to be infected with MRSA USA300.

Josh Figurido, 27, a bartender at Metro, a popular gay bar in the Castro, said he had only heard about the strain this week, but was already taking precautions when it came to sex. “I’m definitely going to be a lot more careful with what goes on,” he said.

But Mr. Figurado said he was less concerned about antigay rhetoric. “It’s not just gay people that get it,” he said. “You can get it anywhere.”

Indeed, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, which helped finance the study, affirmed on Wednesday that the disease was not sexually transmitted or limited to a certain type of person. It is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, the agency said in a statement, and is widespread in hospitals and among hospital workers.

“These infections occur in men, women, adults, children and persons of all races and sexual orientations,” the statement read, adding that while the particular strain identified in the report had been found in gay men, it had also been found in people who were not gay.

For those who do come down with the disease, there are various treatments, including antibiotics. Preventive measures include frequently cleaning hands, clothes and open wounds. MRSA can cause painful sores, which should be lanced and treated to prevent the disease’s spread.

and anonymous,

i was there back then. and i can tell you that a HUGE thing that led to the spread of AIDS was the government not taking action because "that population, instead of "normal people" were infected.

Also, there was a lack of credibility between the lgbt community and legitimate medical community. And why was that?

Because of comments like yours regarding the MSRA infection. You see after years of being villified, lgbts were very suspicious.

That is WHY it is important not to generalize about the MRSA infection. It breeds a aura of distrust that leads to gays not trusting good medical information.

And not being able to trust medcial providers leads to the spread of disease.

AIDS was able to spread easily through the U.S. because of rampant, random gay promiscuity.

Then why does the lesbian community have the lowest rate of HIV/AIDS of any group?

What is the fastest growing segment of the US population that is now being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS? African Americans. And how are African American women acquiring HIV/AIDS? Through high-risk (not using a condom with a partner of unknown HIV status) heterosexual contact and intravenous drug use. http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/aa/resources/factsheets/aa.htm

AIDS is spreading throughout Africa because of heterosexual promiscuity. What is the key to preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS? Education about effective ways to prevent it.

"two thirds or more of young women (aged 15–24 years) lacked comprehensive knowledge of HIV transmission (various surveys, 2000–2004). Data from 35 of the 48 countries in sub-Saharan Africa show that, on average, young men were 20% more likely to have correct knowledge of HIV than young women. Education levels make a huge difference, too (UNICEF, 2004). For example, young women in Rwanda with secondary or higher education were five times as likely to know the main HIV transmission routes than were young women who with no formal education (Ministère de la santé Rwanda, 2001)"

http://www.unaids.org/epi/2005/doc/EPIupdate2005_html_en/epi05_05_en.htm

Promiscuity is a problem regardless of sexual orientation and the MCPS curriculum discourages it. Properly using a male latex condom for every sexual encounter is the best way to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS according to the CDC, NIH, AMA, etc. MCPS is right to include a very thorough and accurate condom usage lesson in the revised health education curriculum.

Thanks for the stats, WFA. They don't change anything. No one ever said that only gay people can get the disease. Indeed, that's why it's a public health concern.

When a group is getting the disease at such high rate, the reason has to investigated. Again, we don't know if the gay rate is isolated to SF and Boston or if its an uncovered phenomenom nationwide that can explain how its getting into hospitals. From the reaction here, it's not hard to see that getting the answer to that will be complicated by political pressure from gay groups. We can see that the welfare of gays will be seen as more important than the health of the general public by radical fringe groups that seem to have so much influence in the governance of our county.

Another echo of the 80s.

"How come you don't wear your private relationship with you maker on you sleeve"

Uh, Improb, the founder of this religion you and TM profess to believe in had these last words:

"Go therefore into all the world and make disciples of all nations."

Wher do you get "private" from that?"

--
I get the understanding of private from the sense that if I am “required” to make disciples of all nations, I better be willing to share with them, not only the uniqueness, and specialness of infinity’s conscious relationship with me, and them, individually, but also if I am to do so, I better realize that the most effective way to do so is in a private setting, where I can be certain that my sincerity will be certainly understood.

Sincerity is trust, and without that, whatever witness I have remains in question.

That is what I mean by private. There is a difference between ‘witnessing to the truth,’
and witnessing to the truth via allowing the spirit to define itself through you.

There’s a reason why it’s called witnessing. It’s because it’s about telling someone what you’ve seen. And I happen to think that seeing God is quite a story.

It's something that can be done on ‘stage,’ but since so, it should also be important enough to express the importance of it’s personal nature.

If the Bible is what lead you to witness God’s love in your life, then you have an obligation to explain how your understanding of the Bible lead to the witness of God.

What did you see that no one else has seen? What is distinctly private about God’s work in your life. What do you know about God that the rest of us don’t?

That is what I mean by private. Personal.

God (the concept of it), which can only be understood by the individual, is being used to define the worthiness (eternal?), of those of us who do not believe in a god, or do not believe in God the way we “should.”

Such an expression cheapens not only the very meaning of a personal relationship with a loving God, for those of us who indeed have it, but the very concept of a loving God itself.

The concept of a loving God should never be private. However, to vocally and outwardly witness to the concept of God, necessarily requires the willingness to provide the PERSONAL PROOF of that witness of God.

I’m not asking for that personal proof of course, but that’s what I mean by private.
