Explain This to Me, Please

Here's the new chairman of the Republican Party of Arkansas, Dennis Milligan:
“At the end of the day, I believe fully the president is doing the right thing, and I think all we need is some attacks on American soil like we had on [Sept. 11, 2001 ], and the naysayers will come around very quickly to appreciate not only the commitment for President Bush, but the sacrifice that has been made by men and women to protect this country,” Milligan said. GOP chief: New strategy key

I'm hoping somebody will help us understand the logic of that.

Like other GOPers, Mr. Milligan has his head deeply buried in the sand. Iraq's sand, no doubt.

With every new poll, fewer Americans believe "the president is doing the right thing" or that the war in Iraq in any way "protects this country."

The logic is clear to me. Mr. Milligan deeply believes that the President has been doing the right thing, but that the American people have lulled themselves into a false sense of security since we have not been hit on our shores since 2001. He believes that a new attack will shock us back to what he sees as reality.

Sadly, it never seems to have occured to him that that the President's policies have increased the danger by creating an atmosphere in which more and more people in the Islamic world are willing to join terrorist schemes. Going into Afghanistan made sense; occupying Iraq has been a disaster.

But if you are brought up to see the world simply in terms of Good and Evil -- and believe that Evil is always out there and can only be dealt with by crushing it (and not understanding that not all Evil is innate -- that much is created by circumstance), then Mr. Milligan's view makes perfect sense.

Yes. If the current administration fails to prevent another attack on American soil and the killing of more than 3,000 people, then we will all be able to see that the president has been very ably preventing these attacks on American soil and the killing of thousands of people. So once our false sense of security is shattered we will be able to see that the president who allowed two such attacks during his eight years in office is in fact a really swell protector-in-chief.

And this would be a good thing.

I also think that the logic is perfectly clear.

A high school senior in Jacksonville, Fla., is getting praise and grief for giving the Gospel in her valedictory address.

Shannon Spaulding, who topped her class of 383 students at Wolfson High School, spoke to about 6,000 people at her commencement ceremony late last month. For nearly 20 minutes, she quoted the Bible and shared about Jesus.

“I want to tell you that Jesus Christ can give you eternal life in Heaven,” she said in her valedictory -- to applause.

“There was a lot of support," she later commented. "I was actually kind of surprised. I didn’t expect that.”

Usually high school seniors don’t have the chance to include God in graduation speeches, because their prayers and speeches are wrongly censored by school officials who fear lawsuits.

But the U.S. Supreme Court has made it clear that if students are given an opportunity to make a speech at a graduation event based on grades or because they were selected by fellow students, they are free to make religious references.

Spaulding's mother, Tracy, said she could not be any prouder of her daughter’s courage.

“It makes me feel like she’s somebody who can think for herself," she said, "and that she has enough compassion for other people and respect for them that she can believe that they can think for themselves."

"prayers and speeches are wrongly censored by school officials who fear lawsuits"

Prayers and speeches by staff should not endorse any single religion because of the Establishment Clause. In this case a Florida student spoke at graduation about her faith and there were no problems. There are Bible clubs at high schools in MCPS that operate with no problems.

How much compassion and respect do you think would have ensued if Shannon had been a lesbian who spoke about tolerance and Jesus' love? Do you think the audience would have been so supportive?

I would imagine that it would depend on what she said about "tolerance and Jesus' love. People have no obligation to have compassion, respect and be supportive concerning ways they don't believe in.

In any case, I have no doubt speakers at graduation ceremonies somewhere in the country have spoken about tolerance for unnatural sexual expression and that no one has questioned their right to hold a view and voice it.

Obviously I am very tolerant of disagreement. Your depiction of another human being's feelings as "unnatural" falls below the threshold of decency.

Most people think there are some feelings which are unnatural. Nothing indecent about this. You and Marlo Thomas, obviously, in this free country of ours, are free to be... you and me.

Let us, however, quote William Peter Hamilton:

"Don't believe the man who tells you there are two sides to every question. There is only one side to the truth."

I doubt that "unnatural" is really the word you are looking for. Human beings, being part of nature, have feelings. Denying they have feelings is unnatural, if you want to be accurate about it. Announcing that another person's feelings are "unnatural" because they don't fit your preconceptions is indecent.

I doubt you believe that when it comes to people who don't believe in religion. Its a shame that a student is encouraging people to believe the falsehood that “Jesus Christ can give you eternal life in Heaven,”. We only have one life to live and we need to make the most of it. This false believe encourages people to overlook injustices and waste their lives in the vain hope that there will be jusice in the end.

As to "unnatural", that's ridicuolous. The presence of gays in all societies througout recorded history and in hundreds if not thousands of animal species shows that this is natural behavior for a minority of the population.

Unceasingly fascinating is the willingness of TTF to completely dismantle the English language to assist the gay agenda. By saying that everything human is natural, they basically erase the vernacular use of the word, which is the state of something without human intervention. In other words,
marked by easy simplicity and freedom from artificiality, affectation, or constraint. This is something that homosexuality is not.

Anon, you seem to question whether human beings are part of nature. That may just be the central question here. I don't find it hard at all to accept us as natural beings.

Well, I think artifice exists. If so, is the manifestation of human desires and actions, apart from the natural world. Homosexuality is as artificial as hairspray and wire-brush Christmas trees.

However, to relieve your unease with this word, I'll rephrase the point of your tangency as thus:

I have no doubt speakers at graduation ceremonies somewhere in the country have spoken in favor of tolerance for artificial sexual expression and that no one has questioned their right to hold a view and to voice it.

Do you have any doubt about that?

Actually, the ones who are off their rockers are the half-wits who claim that homosexual activity, requiring painkillers and lubrication, if not outright surgery to perform is somehow "natural".

Gays are present at all times anonymous, they don't appear right before a civilization declines. And the Roman empire didn't decline until the Christians took over and started persecuting gays.

Anonymous said "Actually, the ones who are off their rockers are the half-wits who claim that homosexual activity, requiring painkillers and lubrication, if not outright surgery to perform is somehow "natural".".

You're deluded anonymous, gays have been having sex throughout history without painkillers, surgery, or anything but natural lubrication.

No one said it reflected badly on gays. The point is that, contrary to Randi's warped logic, mere existence doesn't establish naturalness and normality.

June 09, 2007 1:13 AM
Blogger Priya Lynn said...

Obviously you're wrong anonymous, the consistent existence of gays in a minority of the population across all cultures and times and the existence of same sex activitie throughout nature does establish that its normal and natural

June 09, 2007 10:59 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Obviously not. If mere existence is all that's required for naturalness and normality then sado-masochists, pedophiles, bestialists and necrophiliacs would all be normal.

No one thinks that. TTF's reasoning doesn't make sense.

June 09, 2007 2:27 PM
Blogger Priya Lynn said...

If those things have the same prevalence as gays throughout society, history, and the animal kingdom than they are normal, if not all acceptable, as well.

The vast majority of experts are in agreement, being gay is normal, natural, and acceptable for a minority of the population
