This Morning - Support Casa

Casa de Maryland supported us back in the day when the focus was on the sex-ed curriculum, and now they need our support as the Nutty Ones have turned their attention to the "problem" of illegal immigration. Today (Saturday, May 22nd) they are planning a demonstration at Casa de Maryland offices in Silver Spring. Our side is planning a show of support for Casa. If you can make it to Silver Spring, the information is below.

If you put [ "Maryland Citizens' Rally Against Illegal Immigration" casa ] into Google (the part inside the brackets) you will see more than five dozen web sites with the same thing -- a call to protest at Casa de Maryland in Silver Spring today, Saturday, from "Help Save Maryland." ” Find strength in the fact that you’re not alone and that your actions contribute to a cause, whether in politics, business, or in other spheres of life. I am here to be effective, to have agency, to make claim on power, to spread it around, to rearrange it, to democratize it, to legislate it into justice.” Tony Kusher, playwright

Okay, you can see where they're coming from, they have to SHOUT all the time. They are indignant about "illegal immigrants" getting day jobs that nobody else wants, and they are mad at Casa de Maryland for setting up a place where people who need workers can meet them and take them to work.

To these people it is a serious problem, I don't really know how they think it affects them personally, but they intend to make a big scene in Silver Spring today if they can. Given the timing of it relative to the Arizona law, I expect there could be national news coverage of the event. On the other hand, they may have sixty web sites promoting this thing but there's no guarantee anybody will show up.

Supporters of our county's immigrant community are planning to show up as well. Here is the email that went out yesterday:
Several anti-immigrant groups will be targeting Casa de Maryland this Saturday (May 22) for a "Maryland Citizen's Rally Against Illegal Immigration." They will be demonstrating at Casa's University Blvd. center to "Help Shut Down Casa's Illegal Worker Center..."

So, the good people of Silver Spring and Takoma Park are joining Casa this Sat. morning from 10 to 1 in a positive show of support and activity during the demonstration. We will be moving equipment, making phone calls, helping to clean up Casa's Center, etc. and "at the same time let people in the community know that not everyone agrees with the haters marching outside our gate."

If you can join with Casa this Saturday, email Helen Melton at hmelton@casamd.org to confirm. Casa will have cookies and juice for the volunteers. Casa's center is at 734 E. University Blvd. Silver Spring - one block east of Piney Branch Rd.

When you get there, make sure the Casa people know what you're there for. If there's a crowd, don't let your body add to the count, go immediately to Casa and talk to the people there, make sure they know what side you're on.

From the L A. Times
1 40% of all workers in L. A. County ( L. A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes.
This is because they are predominantly illegal immigrants working without a green card.
2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.
3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.
4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.
5. Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally.
6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.
7... The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.
8 Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.
9. 21 radio stations in L. A. Are Spanish speaking.
10. In L.. A. County 5.1 million people speak English, 3.9 million speak Spanish.. (There are 10.2 million people in L. A. County .)

(All 10 of the above facts were published in the Los Angeles Times)

Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but29% are on welfare. Over 70% of the United States ' annual population growth(and over 90% of California , Florida , and New York ) results from immigration. 29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens .

We are fools for letting this continue

Thanks, Anon. Snopes.com keeps us honest, and luckily they have addressed the exact text you just copied and pasted from some rightwing rumor mill. Their conclusion: "The various figures quoted above were not taken from a 2002 Los Angeles Times article. They appear to have been gleaned from a variety of sources and vary in accuracy as noted below..."

The site then goes through each of the lies you just published here, shows its origin, and explains what the number actually represents. You'll be surprised to learn that there is actually a kernel of truth to some of them. Most seem to go back to a 2005 talk by Heather MacDonald, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research.

This exact same email has been circulating for years.

Maybe you can explain just how immigration has hurt you personally, what it has cost you, maybe you have story of a loud party or a jaywalker or perhaps the discomfort you experienced when people nearby were speaking a foreign language. I would be interested to know just what it is that makes someone hate an outgroup that has left their home in search of prosperity and hope.

It is interesting that someone would read a statement like this one you just posted, and accept it as gospel without looking into its sources at all. It says what you believe, and so you do not question it. There are certainly good reasons to improve American policy on immigration, you could have proposed a cogent argument but that isn't what motivates you. You want to feel sorry for yourself, you want to justify the feeling of disgust you feel when you are around people who are different from you.

HERE is CNN news from my hometown that you might enjoy. Problem in Arizona: work, and nobody to do it.

I just hope that what is happening in AZ does not happen here in Maryland. Seriously, cutting ethnic studies programs? This reminds me of what I read in the history books about Nazi Germany around 1939.

The attempt to continue dumbing down America obviously plows forward on the Right.

Thanks for the fact checking, Jim.

Maybe Anonymous is one of the handful of haters who showed up to protest at CASA de Maryland yesterday. The blogger, cecilcalvert, ("First Generation Marylander/Activist/Direct Descendant of George and Cecil Calvert, the Founders of Maryland") laments:

"The People of Maryland are demanding a Federal Led Investigation into the going’s on of this group and we are also demanding the IRS take a look at that financials to find those who are donating from outside of this country who is on the USA watch list."

Apparently English grammar is not cecilcalvert's forte.

But hey! He attracts great commenters -- one aptly named "Bob Jones"

< eye roll >

So cecilcalvert thinks it was "the people of Maryland" who were protesting yesterday? But the pictures of the protest he posted at the bottom his report -- after noting "I would show you some pictures from today’s rally, but why should I? You ignore the Maryland Citizen and Legal Immigrant, and would probably find someway to use it against us" -- show a grand total of six protesters holding signs and seven other people standing around.

There are a lot more than 13 "People of Maryland," cecilcalvert.

Hello Jim.

I read the snopes article, and basically most of the email was accurate.

ILLEGAL aliens are here ILLEGALLY.

they are costing the US a ton of money every year, and the US is going bankrupt.

End of argument. They need to go home.

they can apply for immigration legally after they get back home.

what about that is so difficult to understand ? and by the way, the anchor baby law should be revoked, the US is the only country that has this, and it was passed to prevent slaves from being sent home.

Anon, is there some way that these people have offended you or affected you personally? When we were spending a billion dollars a week to decimate the population of Iraq you didn't complain, so I know it's not about the expense.

Why don't you do what I did and learn a little Spanish, your new neighbors will appreciate it.

The government needs to establish and maintain good immigration policies, no doubt. Casa de Maryland is dealing with the problem in a positive way and it is stupid to protest them, they don't set policy and are not chartered to enforce it, they simply help make life tolerable for those poor people who have come here looking for work.

BTW, how'd that protest go yesterday? Did the throngs of teabaggers spill out into the streets? I didn't see it mentioned in the news.

I see reading comprehension is still a problem for our Anonymous troll. SNOPES showed that most of the contentions in that email were at best partial truths that had been spun into falsehoods using incomplete data by advocates against immigration. For example, what part of:

"According to the most controversial study of those discussed here, the benefits and costs of immigration to the United States in 1992 add up to a total net cost to all levels of government of $42.5 billion. This study, by Donald Huddle, was sponsored by the Carrying Capacity Network, a nonprofit group that advocates major reductions in immigration to the United States. "The Costs of Immigration" (Huddle 1993) uses estimation procedures that include a variety of errors [including omitting Social Security taxes paid]. When these errors are corrected, the post-1970 immigrants in Huddle's study actually show a surplus of revenues over social service costs of at least $25 billion."

do you not comprehend?

Many illegals pay into Social Security through their employers, but as illegals they will most likely never collect a dime, so we should thank illegal immigrants for their contribution to US Citizen's retirement benefits.

"...While it has been evident for years that illegal immigrants pay a variety of taxes, the extent of their contributions to Social Security is striking: the money added up to about 10 percent of last year's surplus - the difference between what the system currently receives in payroll taxes and what it doles out in pension benefits...

..."Our assumption is that about three-quarters of other-than-legal immigrants pay payroll taxes," said Stephen C. Goss, Social Security's chief actuary, using the agency's term for illegal immigration.

Three of the untruths in this bogus email were created by Heather MacDonald, one of the dozen elites who explained "Why I Turned Right." She treats news about immigrants like Peter Sprigg treats news about LGBT people or like Betsy McCaughey treats news about health care reform -- that is MacDonald spins news to make immigrants look as bad as possible. She just published more of her vile lies about immigration and AZ's new law in the Washington Examiner earlier this month as that right wing rag was headed for bankruptcy.

Illegal aliens cost :

Total cost is a whooping... $338.3 BILLION A YEAR!!!

http://www.rense.com/general80/mroe.htm

Okay bea, tear this one apart. I have no personal beef with illegals or their nationality or anything about them ... other than the fact they are here illegally.

when 1/2 your salary that YOU WOULD HAVE SPENT ON YOUR KIDS COLLEGE AND WAS THE REASON YOU WORKED ALL YOUR LIFE gets taxed away to pay for illegals benefits and turtles tunnels, you get a bit pissed off.

I pay for close to 4 years college of one of my kids EVERY DAMN YEAR in taxes.

I worked my whole life to be able to afford their college.

and now I have the heat and the a/c off because I can't make the numbers work.

Why I am paying for the folks who are here illegally to have kids and pay for their kids medical and pay for their kids school when our own schools have been so corrupted I am afraid to send my kids there ?

Not just me, but the african american lady across the street in CCV told me that the gangs in WESLYN (the HISPANIC GANGS) are so bad that she has pulled her children out of school and is homeschooling......

so the african american lady across the street is a bigot ???? no, anyone who doesn't agree with your viewpoint jim is a bigot.... that is the current definition on ttf... but wait, I thought it was only us white racist homophobes who were bigots ? these african americans are too ????

wake up and smell the coffee jim.

I SPONSORED an African for her visa and CO-Signed her loan for her car and her student loan. She was a best friend and my kids confident. She is a fervent Christian. she is a brilliant person, which was obvious to my husband and I from her first encounter with us when I fired the blue eyed blonde hair college summer student from maryland whose parents I had talked to and hired the african american solid black with no parents alive. WHAT PART OF THIS EQUATION MAKE ME A BIGOT.

Josie spoke this darn crazy chi chi language (which she demonstrated) and Josie, the african, was a solid member of our family for 15 years. My kids were in her wedding. NOne of my kids have been married, (I would hope not at 19) but Josie remains a part of our family. If my kids DO get married soon, Josie, our student visa turned legal immigrant turned physicians assistant (and in line to doctor) .... Josie WOULD be in the kids wedding.. she is coming to the beach wiht me for my last son's graduation party.... not as a nanny with a charge as a friend). I love Josie and she loves me. I gave her the credit she needed, she gave my kids the guidance I was too busy working to provide. Josie didn't ask me to provie this help until 2 years after I realized she was an indispensable part of our family. She asked for help in sponsorship for a green card, for help in co-signing a loan for her car, and for help in co-signing a loan for her house. All of which I helped with..

Josie is 100 percent black and because I helped her, I am 100 percent bigot ????? where the heck do you get your statistics from....

Folks like me are just trying to make sure that the country DOESN"T GO BANKRUPT supporting illegals, and your CONTINUAL characterization of those us who have HELPED PEOPLE get though the process legally, REALLY, REALLY, makes me mad.

I can never repay her for providing exactly the hard working ethics I would have instilled in my children.. yet you have a problem with this ?

SHE DID THIS LEGALLY !

she was not african american, simply african. As a result, she has a work ethic as do the hispanic immigrants. How did I end up with Josie ? Because my previous nanny of five years couldn't help the kids with their homework and I desperately needed someone who could......and could drive ! I tried the college students around MD but they did not care about my kids. I needed a nanny that loved my kids. I picked african josie. As a result of my sponsorship, Josie now has legal status, and a PA degree that I co-signed the darn loan for !!!

So you go right ahead and call me, that made African americans and hispanics (my previous two nannies, one of which I ALSO sponsored) a bigot... and I will call you what you are - an ILL INFORMED ASSHOLE.

I am just asking that folks do what my previous employees do.....
GET LEGAL.

Anon, let me get this straight. Are you calling me an ill informed asshole, or was your comment directed to a more general public?

I was thinking you might have a suggestion for regulating immigration. I don't think Casa de Maryland is responsible for the problem. In fact, I think you might agree with me that the federal government should take control of the situation, legislating reasonable policies and enforcing them. Or maybe you're one of those "small government" types who believes government should stay out of it, and let people regulate themselves -- which is it?

I don't mind name calling but can't see how a solution to the problem comes from it, at least in this case.

It is cheaper with 3 small children to hire a nanny than put them in daycare.
run the numbers.

If two people are working full time, someone has to take care of them.

It is a dollars and cents issue, and most families with more than two kids come to the same conclusion. It is a no brainer.

the country is broke and we can't afford the 330 billion a year this problem is costing us.

Wow! Earlier this week you were complaining about the findings of the 1992 Huddle study, specifically that "...the benefits and costs of immigration to the United States in 1992 add up to a total net cost to all levels of government of $42.5 billion."

At 1 AM this morning, you suddenly decided that "Total cost is a whooping... $338.3 BILLION A YEAR!!! "

Just keep spewing different numbers every day and we'll all believe you know exactly what you're talking about, Theresa!

< eye roll >

http://www.rense.com/general80/mroe.htm

Okay bea, tear this one apart.

You're kidding right? The rense.com email is full of links (mostly dead links) to CNN transcripts quoting right wingers like Heritage Foundation lobbyist Robert Rector, who are not thought of as "spin free," groups that seek to reduce immigration to our nation, and even quoting rense.com itself!

How lopsided can you get?

BTW all of the CNN transcripts are for Lou Dobbs' shows! Of course that was back before Dobbs decided to change his opposition to immigration into pro-amnesty support for illegals in comments he made on Telemundo, comments that caused groups like "LouDobbsForPresident.org" to drop support for a Dobbs presidency like a hot potato.

As far as debunking each of the 14 lies in your rense.com piece (which includes a link to a SNOPES page about Bank of America, which has nothing to do with this email's 14 claims about immigration), well that has already been done. In 2009 FactCheck.org, reviewed the 14 claims in the email posted at rense.com, and found overall:

"...a 2007 report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office examined 29 reports on state and local costs published over 15 years in an attempt to answer this question. CBO concluded that most of the estimates determined that illegal immigrants impose a net cost to state and local governments but "that impact is most likely modest." CBO said "no agreement exists as to the size of, or even the best way of measuring, that cost on a national level."

Then FactCheck.org went through each of the 14 items and found:

1. "This item is completely false..."

2. and 3. claim "...a total net cost estimate to the federal government for illegal immigrants of just under $10.4 billion for the year, after accounting for the taxes these immigrants paid. That doesn’t include any potential costs to state or local governments, but it’s a far cry from this e-mail’s cost claim of $338.3 billion.

BTW, this $10.4 figure is yet another figure that differs with the $42.5 billion you claimed illegal immigrants cost a few days ago.

May 25, 2010 6:21 PM
Anonymous Aunt Bea said...

4. and 5. and 6. and 7. These were all items stated by CNN reporter, Christine Roman and FactCheck.org tells the differences between what Roman reported and the reports she drew the figures from and also that "...the e-mail misrepresents what Romans said. She gave figures for people who are "not U.S. citizens," a category that would include legal residents as well as "illegal aliens."

Romans said that "according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, **30 percent** of federal prisoners are not U.S. citizens," adding that "most are thought to be illegal aliens." Actually, the Federal Bureau of Prisons does not keep figures on illegal immigrants. What solid numbers we can find point to a much smaller figure. A Department of Justice report from 2003 found that only **1.6 percent** of the state and federal prison populations was under Immigration and Customs Enforcement jurisdiction, and thus known to be illegal immigrants. Half of these prisoners were detained only because they were here illegally, not for other crimes."

8. This item conflates "illegal aliens" with "legal and illegal low-skill immigrant households (those headed by someone who doesn’t have a high school diploma)" per Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation

9. "...The e-mail continues its practice of ignoring any distinction between legal and illegal immigration."

10. "This is false. The "verify" link leads to yet another transcript of Lou Dobbs speaking with Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation. This one is dated June 12, 2006, and [Heritage Foundation's lobbyist] Rector says, "Hispanics in the United States have a crime rate that’s two and a half times that of white non-Hispanics."

Rector said Hispanics, not illegal immigrants, as the e-mail alleges. Considering there are 45.4 million Hispanics in the country, and an estimated 11.9 million illegal immigrants, the distinction is notable..."

11. The link goes to a 2006 report written by the Republican staff of the House Subcommittee on Investigations of the Committee on Homeland Security. To start, the "19,500" number of "illegal aliens from Terrorist Countries" is nowhere to be found in this report. In fact, the report estimates the number of illegal immigrants coming over the southern border from countries known to harbor terrorists to be in the "hundreds..."

12. No, it didn’t...

13. This is another bogus figure...

14. "Once again, the "verify" link is dead. But a little Internet research found the article cited. An independently published, non-peer-reviewed study did estimate that nearly a million sex crimes have been committed by illegal immigrants over a seven-year period, but it employs some highly creative math and interesting assumptions to get there. The "study" is actually a pretty good case study in bad research..."

Got any more bogus numbers and documentation you want me to fact check for you?
