Hate Comes to Maryland

Two news stories relevant to our life in Maryland after the election. I'll take them both from The Post:
Administrators at a Bethesda middle school found numerous images of a swastika drawn on a boys’ bathroom wall Friday, the second such incident at the school in the past two weeks.

In a letter sent home to parents of students at Westland Middle School in Bethesda, principal Alison Serino said the school has contacted the Montgomery County Police Department to investigate the acts of vandalism.

“We are very saddened by this incident,” Serino wrote. “This type of behavior will not be tolerated. Once the culprit(s) are identified, consequences will be administered in accordance with the MCPS Student Code of Conduct.”

In an interview Friday, Serino said that she was “sad and disturbed” about the incidents and that she and her staff are planning to address the issue with students when they return next week.

“I think we need to double down on our efforts about respect, knowledge of one another, and understanding where people are coming from,” she said. “I think it’s a really important time to be an educator.”

Serino said that the incidents have caused “concern and worry” for the school’s students. She added that while the school year has been mostly typical so far, “there is heightened awareness around race, ethnicity and religion” as a result of the presidential election. Middle school administrators find swastikas in a boys’ bathroom
The timing of this is obvious, especially since these kinds of things have been going on all over the country. Swastikas, effigy-lynchings, pussy-grabbing -- and sorry but we're calling it what the President-elect of the United States calls it -- women have had their hajibs torn off, anti-black messages and people in blackface, Muslims and Hispanics are harassed and threatened randomly on the street.

This is what we chose on November 8th.

Here is what Montgomery County's Superintendent of Schools wrote:
Dear Members of the MCPS Community:

I am writing to share with you how Montgomery County Public Schools is assisting our staff and students in processing the outcome of Tuesday’s presidential election. This election season has been particularly difficult. It caused a great deal of emotion among many members of our community. We want to take this opportunity to reiterate the values that are foundational to this school system.

Now that the election is over, it is our job to restate our core values as a school system—demonstrating that we respect and care for every person in our community. First and foremost, we must reassure our staff and students that our school buildings are safe places where we truly value and respect every single individual and do not tolerate bullying or hate speech. The diversity of our community and the many cultures, languages, and religions that make up our school system continues to be our greatest strength. We are better when we all work together, learn together, and listen to each other.

We must have open and respectful conversations about the lessons of living in a democracy. That is our commitment as educators, and on this day honoring our veterans, we will help students move forward in understanding our democracy and how our nation works and endures. We will teach our students the important principles that are the foundation of our nation and we will do all we can to continue to foster a culture of understanding and respect for everyone.

Our schools are a resource for families as well. Counselors are available to help students process any concerns or feelings they have about the election. Curricular resources have been provided to assist teachers in discussing the election. We will continue to draw on the expertise of the Equity Initiatives Unit to help forge stronger understanding of the many perspectives in our community, state and nation.

Ultimately, we must reinforce at every opportunity that our schools are safe places where students learn and where we all work together to build a community that values and respects every person.

Sincerely,
Jack R. Smith, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools

As frightening as it is to have swastikas in the middle school, this next story frightens me even more, because this involves adults who have been elected to pubic office.

Joshua Starr used to be Superintendent of Schools in Montgomery County. The night of the elections, he tweeted the following:

The Post can tell you what happened.
The fallout of a divisive presidential campaign played out on social media this week, after a state senator in Maryland blasted a message from the schools chief in Baltimore County asking that educators embrace groups of minority students.

The exchange started after Baltimore County School Superintendent S. Dallas Dance, who is active on Twitter, retweeted a message posted by Joshua P. Starr, the onetime superintendent of Montgomery County’s public school system.

Starr’s election-night tweet also addressed educators: “tomorrow pls show your muslim, black, latino, jewish, disabled, or just non-white St’s, that you love them and will protect them!”

Dance retweeted it Wednesday morning, setting off an angry reaction that included an online petition calling for him to step down.

“How about showing love to all students, every day?” one critic tweeted. “How dare you bring race and religion into this publicly.”

Said another: “Wow I can’t believe he just said that. What a racist ... .”

State Sen. Johnny Ray Salling (R-Baltimore County), a retired steelworker who lives in Dundalk and supported Donald Trump in the presidential election, took to both Twitter and Facebook Thursday.

“I’m very disappointed and angry with this message that Dr. Dance, Superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools, shared on his Twitter,” he wrote. “All messages like this do is pit students against each other and further divide them. National leaders, from both parties, have called for unity after the election. Messages like this do the exact opposite.

“For working class families in the 6th district, like my own, our support for Donald Trump had nothing to do with race or gender. It had everything to do with economic insecurity and the feeling as if our communities have been neglected. People on both sides fail to realize that and only make assumptions.”

“It is my hope, that moving forward Dr. Dance will focus on working to address issues like the grading policy and lack of A/C in Baltimore County schools. . . . Moving forward, I will be working to unify my community and continue to listen to constituents of all races and backgrounds. I hope others will do the same.”
There is a cliche where someone, upon hearing about Black Lives Matter, comes back with "all lives matter," as if that were a wise and insightful thing to say. "Black lives matter" needs to be said because we have an epidemic in our country of police killing black people. Of course all lives matter, and the white people of Salling's consituency need hugs, too, but right now there is a deliberate campaign against minorities and weak citizens, and they are going to need some care and attention. Everybody needs love, but sometimes it's an emergency, sometimes somebody needs love and support right now.
On Thursday afternoon, Dance issued a statement.

“As superintendent of one of the largest most diverse school systems in our country, “ he wrote, “I always lead from an equity lens with an intense focus on all student populations and ensuring they feel welcome and supported. Education is not void of politics and during the last two years, our country has had one of the most divisive campaigns in modern history. Comments were made that disenfranchised several groups of students we serve in Baltimore County Public Schools.

“As our nation moves forward, it is our collective responsibility to make sure all students feel safe and know we are their advocates. As I continue leading our school system and as a member of several educational organizations, my continued focus is to work with local, state and national government representatives to move public education forward for all students.”

Starr said Friday that educators must protext the physical and psychological safety of children who might feel scared or vulnerable because of hateful rhetoric during and now after the presidential campaign.

“I think the reaction to my tweet and to Dallas’ retweet are indications of how much there needs to be done in our country and our schools to help white people understand the role that race plays in society and schools,” Starr said. “Donald Trump’s campaign brought out the worst of America – xenophobia, racism, anti-semitism, misogyny and disparagement of LGBTQ and people with disabilities – essentially anyone that’s not a white male. While not all people who voted for Trump did so because they share these beliefs, disregarding their potential impact on kids is irresponsible of educators. Educators need to be on the front lines of addressing injustice however it may manifest itself. We’ve already seen examples of kids of color being subject to hateful speech and actions in schools since Tuesday.”

The debate took place as some teachers, particularly those at schools with large immigrant and minority populations, faced classrooms full of anxious and distraught students this week. Many scrapped lesson plans Wednesday in favor of discussions about the election, seeking to ease fears that the students or their family members might be deported or that Trump might target Muslims. Social media lights up over message to show love for Muslim, black, Latino, nonwhite students
There is a little more.

Good people have to look out for our values and principles during these times, as defenders of prejudice are suddenly empowered to speak out against groups who can't defend themselves. I understand you are tired of it all, your shoulders are slumped, it seems like too much to take on. But you've got to.

"This is what we chose on November 8th."

I have to nitpick here.

We did NOT choose the self-admitted sexual predator for president. Hillary alone got more votes than he did. Consider that the votes for Johnson, Stein, and McMullin were also against Trump.

More people voted against him than for him.

We did NOT choose him. The Electoral College will do that next month, if they follow tradition. His installation into office will be because of geography and where lines were drawn on maps - not because most people thought he was the best choice.

We should seriously consider this though - the penalties for being a "faithless elector" appear to be minor. I haven't looked at each state, but $1000 so far appears to be the worst. A "Go Fund Me" page should be set up to pay any of these fines that !right occur. At this point it looks like on 52 would need to flip to put Clinton in office.

The game is played by established rules. Some states could be recounted, some electors could defect, dreams sometimes come true. The fact is, Democrats did not turn out to support their candidate, and she lost by the rules of the process. Ninety-nine percent chance. America -- "we" -- chose fascism.

Cyn,

it remains to be seen if Trump is a fascist

he does seem to have authoritarian tendencies, but so does Obama

all-in-all, he has a chance to unite America

being a Dem most of his life, he seems open to all views

plus, he likes to make deals

as far as being a racist, the whole thing is a media canard

imagine that

on the electoral college v popular vote issue, you have to remember that, in states where the polls showed it was settled, millions may have decided there was no point in voting

hence, the fact that Hillary won more popular votes is meaningless since a popular vote wasn't announced and conducted

there's no way of telling who would have won if that had happened

"as far as being a racist, the whole thing is a media canard"

You don't understand what "media canard" is, what "racist" is, or possibly both.

"Obama is secretly a Muslim" is a media canard, with this implicit assumption that Islam is an inferior religion.

"Obama was born on Kenya" is a media canard with indirect but clear racism.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Is just plain naked racism.

"plus, he likes to make deals"

So do pimps.

While the fact that he likes to make deals is a huuuuge and welcome departure from recent Republican behavior, the majority of his deals appear to have only enriched him personally, at the expense of everyone else involved. This is not a got precedent for a president. Neither are his six bankruptcies.

"all-in-all, he has a chance to unite America"

It is far more likely that he will "untie" America.

Lecture me about all the "rules" you like, but it will all fall on deaf ears until the Senate approves (or at least has a fair vote) on Obama's supreme Court nominee. Republicans have effectively stolen Obama's last appointment by sitting on the ball and waiting for the clock to run out - threatening to do the same through the entire Clinton administration if necessary. Republicans have damaged the supreme Court and the office of the president in the uncompromising pursuit of their own agenda without regard to the consequences to our government or our country.

They have gotten away with it because Democrats have been far too accommodating and non-confrontational. They have let Republicans run the country for the last 6 years because they didn't have the gumption to stand and up and push back against their intransigence and bullying.

Our country can't sit idly by and let this continue to happen. Republicans see even the mention of compromise as weakness. They define strength as doing whatever it take to get what they want. It is time for Democrats to reflect that right back to them. They can not be reasoned with. They will only learn the fallacies of their belligerence if it is returned to them in full, now, while their previous intransigent behavior is still fresh in their memories.

Maybe once they see for themselves that "what is good for the goose is good for the gander," maybe, just maybe, they will start to see the wisdom of compromise and the system of checks and balances set up by the founders.

If Democrats don't stand up and show some spine now, they will continue to get walked over year after year, and election after election.

Murderous criminals kill people, where they came from or what the color of their skin is, or whether they immigrated, is not the determining factor.

Just ask the families that are still grieving after Dylann Roof's attmept to make America great again.

The idea that immigrants are coming here to steal our jobs and commit crimes is a media canard promulgated by right wing Republicans.

There is a simple solution to getting illegal immigrants to go back home, but you never hear politians propose it. Put the people who hire illegals in jail. Don't let them get away with fines. Make it a five year minimum jail sentence. Illegal immigrants will quickly lose nearly all their job opportunities and go back home.

The truth is that farms and corporations WANT a labor force that will work for less than minimum wage, and has no chance to form a working union. If they do try to organize, just call in the immigration police and your problem magically goes away, with resources paid for by the US taxpayer. New, low wage workers are available the very next day.

The people walking here through jungles and deserts for thousands of miles to try and find a better life for their families are just the kind of hard working, "never give up," determined people that make great US citizens. People wth less ambition and drive stay home and "make do."

Agent Orange may very well spend billions of dollars making a "beautiful" 25 foot wall all along the southern border.

The very next day, some enterprising Latino will start a new business making 26 foot ladders.

I agree with you.
this and E-Verify and mandatory prison sentences if someone who is deported comes back.

Mexico is building a wall on it's southern border....
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3790116/Mexico-wants-build-border-wall-Central-America-illegal-immigrants.html

we build a wall, we put cameras and motions detectors embedded within it, we have those motion detectors set of loud alarms and call ICE, and we turn people back before they get here.

If you had looked at the tax code, and the cost of education, the bottom line is we cannot afford any more unskilled workers. We need to insist that the folks here that are not working do those jobs. we stop paying people not to work.

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich on Friday night blasted Donald Trump and those who voted for the president-elect.

Popovich told reporters he's still trying to process Trump's election, saying, "It's too early. I'm just sick to my stomach."

He said he's "disgusted" that voters were willing to brush aside Trump's "xenophobic, homophobic, racist, misogynistic" language during his campaign.

"I live in that country where half of the people ignored all of that to elect someone," Popovich said. "That's the scariest part of the whole thing to me. It's got nothing to do with the environment and Obamacare, and all of the other stuff. We live in a country that ignored all of those values that we would hold our kids accountable for. They'd be grounded for years if they acted and said the things that have been said in that campaign by Donald Trump."

He also expressed confusion that evangelical Christians were willing to ignore Trump's hateful language. He added that he respects political figures like Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham and John McCain, as well as Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich — all of whom he disagrees with politically — for not condoning Trump's actions.

Popovich reasoned that anyone can understand Trump's message while not forgiving his "fear mongering."

"It leaves me wondering where I've been living, and with whom I'm living," he said.

Popovich continued, blasting the postelection rhetoric and the way Trump's transition into office is being handled.

"The fact that people can just gloss that over, start talking about the transition team, and we're all going to be kumbaya now and try to make the country good without talking about any of those things. And now we see that he's already backing off of immigration and Obamacare and other things, so was it a big fake, which makes you feel it's even more disgusting and cynical that somebody would use that to get the base that fired up. To get elected. And what gets lost in the process are African-Americans, and Hispanics, and women, and the gay population, not to mention the eighth-grade developmental stage exhibited by him when he made fun of the handicapped person. I mean, come on. That's what a seventh grade, eighth grade bully does. And he was elected president of the United States. We would have scolded our kids. We would have had discussions until we were blue in the face trying to get them to understand these things. He is in charge of our country. That's disgusting."

According to the San Antonio News-Express, a reporter began to ask another question, and Popovich cut him off:

"I'm not done. One could go on and on. We didn't make this stuff up. He's angry at the media because they reported what he said and how he acted. That's ironic to me. It makes no sense. So that's my real fear, and that's what gives me so much pause and makes me feel so badly that the country is willing to be that intolerant and not understand the empathy that's necessary to understand other group's situations. I'm a rich white guy, and I'm sick to my stomach thinking about it. I can't imagine being a Muslim right now, or a woman, or an African American, a Hispanic, a handicapped person. How disenfranchised they might feel. And for anyone in those groups that voted for him, it's just beyond my comprehension how they ignore all of that. My final conclusion is, my big fear is — we are Rome."

Riiiiight. Only three weeks ago you were telling us "Trump will be president, let's hope our Republic survives".

You told us repeatedly that trump was "the most gay friendly presidential candidate ever" and that he was "a life long gay rights supporter".

Of course two days ago you contradicted yourself and said the election of Trump meant "the gay agenda is on the run".

Now, that's just what a troll like you does, contradicts yourself whenever it suits your immediate goal of provoking and/or conning good people but the overriding fact is that you couldn't care less about what's true, you'll happily lie and contradict yourself whenever it suits your immediate purpose. So obviously not even you believe "all-in-all, he has a chance to unite America being a Dem most of his life, he seems open to all views plus, he likes to make deals as far as being a racist, the whole thing is a media canard" - you'll happily lie to advance and con people into supporting your anti-gay, anti-woman, pro-theocracy, freedom destroying agenda.

Typical Wyatt/bad anonymous trying to trivialize an attempt to terrorize children. No matter how much you dislike it Wyatt, good teachers aren't going to ignore this kind of attack.

Wyatt/bad anonymous said "sounds like it happened before Trump was elected so he latest media canard about how his election has triggered mass spasms of racism is undermined".

Yes, many of these incidents did happen before the election but there's been an explosion of them since Trump got elected. Trump's racist comments and promises to "build a wall", deport brown people, ban Muslims and so on has been going on for two years so obviously some of these incidents happening before he was elected in no way absolves him of guilt for provoking them.

Wyatt/bad anonymous said "of course, its Hillary supporters now acting out in violence across the land".

The protests against Trump are overwhelmingly peaceful. There have been some isolated incidents but they are dwarfed in comparison to the never ending stream of attacks by Trump supporters on women, LGBT people, muslims, and other minorities.

Nonsense. Virtually none of the Trump supporting students attacking minorities have undergone any diversity training. They've all openly expressed that their motivation is the example Trump has set, none of them have mentioned "diversity training" when carrying out their attacks. Obviously you'd like to prevent the very thing that's going to alleviate these hateful attacks and help students to live and learn together peacefully. You want to enable and spread this type of violence.

Wyatt/bad anonymous said "educators need to understand that they are their to teach their subjects, not engineer our society and provide moral guidance they aren't qualified for that role".

Dangerous nonsense. Children left to themselves turn into violent animals. Teachers cannot abdicate their responsibility to teach students basic respect and caring for each other based on the fundamental moral precept of "Do whatever you want, but harm no one". What you're promoting is anarchy and a "Lord of the Flies" school environment. Thank god you never became a teacher who would be allowing the strong to prey upon the weak. Wyatt/bad anonymous has made it abundantly clear he wants to prevent teachers from addressing violent attacks on minority students.

While the media played a large role, spending as much time on the non-issue of Hillaries emails as all other topics combined and inaccurately refering to it as a "scandal" when there wasn't any wrongdoing or "scandalous" behavior, it was really James Comey's breaking of Justice Department guidelines to wrongly smear Hillary that really made the difference. This was the first time in American history the FBI worked with the KGB to help elect a candidate both preferred. Trump got billions in free advertising from the media. The media certainly was unprofessional and biased, but that favoured Trump almost exclusively, not Hillary.

Trump's racist comments and promises to "build a wall", deport brown people, ban Muslims and so on has been going on for two years so obviously some of these incidents happening before he was elected in no way absolves him of guilt for provoking them. Over the past two years children have been quoting Trump and telling minorities they're going to be deported and made slaves again and so on. The idea that incidents such as this happenened before the election proves Trump wasn't responsible is obviously false.

Trump inspired racism and attacks on gays, women, and minorities have been going on throughout his bigoted, misogynistic, and racist campaign.
Trump has brought racism out of the closet. Trump has made it okay and "cool" to "tell it like it is" and be as racist as you want to be.

This started two years ago when he announced his candidacy and said Mexican immigrants were "bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists" and MAYBE some are good people.

Trump inspired racism has really exploded since the election but it started long before it.

Wyatt/bad anonymous is grasping at straws to try and claim Trump hasn't inspired an explosion of racism, misogyny, and bigotry in the States.

Remember, 3 weeks ago Wyatt/bad anonymous said "Trump will be president, let's hope our Republic survives".

Wyatt must be getting whiplash from his reversals on Trump.

Count your blessings Obama is not so petty or lacking in self-confidence or he might sue you for some of the stinking bullcrap you have posted about him.

"of course, its Hillary supporters now acting out in violence across the land"

Another bullshit lie told by a lying liar.

Get your head out of your bubble and go f--k yourself!

Reports of hateful intimidation and harassment erupted across social media networks in the wake of the presidential election Tuesday night.

"Pulling from news reports, social media, and direct submissions at the Southern Poverty Law Center's website, the SPLC had counted 201 incidents of election-related harassment and intimidation across the country as of Friday, November 11 at 5pm. These range from anti-Black to anti-woman to anti-LGBT incidents. There were many examples of vandalism and epithets directed at individuals. Often times, types of harassment overlapped and many incidents, though not all, involved direct references to the Trump campaign. Every incident could not be immediately independently verified.

Among the findings:

[TABLE]

Anti-Black and Anti-immigrant incidents were far and away the most reported with anti-Muslim being the third most common. The category of "Trump" consisted of incidents where there was no clear racially defined target, like the pro-Trump vandalism of a "unity" sign in Connecticut.

Some of the reports that came directly to the SPLC include:

"My 12 year old daughter is African American. A boy approached her and said, "now that Trump is president, I'm going to shoot you and all the blacks I can find". We reported it to the school who followed up with my daughter and the boy appropriately."

Another, this time in a college setting:

"The day after the presidential election, my friend, a black female freshman in a [Boston area college], heard a white female student say: "this is their punishment for 8 years of black people." When she turned around to see who said it, the white student laughed at her."

In Louisiana, a woman was harassed by white men in a passing car which was a frequently reported "venue" of harassment since election day:

"I was standing at a red light waiting to cross the street. A black truck with three white men pulled up to the red light. One of them yelled, "Fuck your black life!" The other two began to laugh. One began to chant "Trump!" as they drove away."

Anti-immigrant incidents often came with reference to the Trump campaign. In Washington state, a teacher reported:

""Build a wall" was chanted in our cafeteria Wed at lunch."If you aren't born here, pack your bags" was shouted in my own classroom. "Get out spic" was said in our halls."

Another:

A student in an English IV course told his teacher, who is Mexican-American, that he needs to take his family and get out of our country. The student mentioned he wasn't welcome any longer. He supported this argument by citing comments from our President-elect.

Disturbingly, the most commonly reported location where incidents of harassment occurred were K-12 schools...."

And:

"Someone painted "Trump 2016 MAGA" and "you gotta go back now" on the wall outside the building I work in at the University of South Florida"

There were reports of misogynistic incidents as well like this incident from Colorado:

""Death to Diversity" was written on a banner displayed on our library for people to see, as well as written on posters across campus. As well as white males going up to women saying that it was now "legal to grab them by the pussy"."

New York Times versus Sullivan, - 1964 was a landmark United States Supreme Court case that established the actual malice standard, which has to be met before press reports about public officials can be considered to be defamation and libel; and hence allowed free reporting of the civil rights campaigns in the southern United States.

It is one of the key decisions supporting the freedom of the press. The actual malice standard requires that the plaintiff in a defamation or libel case, if he is a "public figure", prove that the publisher of the statement in question knew that the statement was false or acted in reckless disregard of its truth or falsity. Because of the extremely high burden of proof on the plaintiff, and the difficulty of proving the defendant's knowledge and intentions, such claims by public figures rarely prevail.

Before this decision, there were nearly $300 million in libel actions from the Southern states outstanding against news organizations, as part of a focused effort by Southern officials to use defamation lawsuits as a means of preventing critical coverage of civil rights issues in out-of-state publications.

The Supreme Court's decision, and its adoption of the actual malice standard, reduced the financial hazard from potential defamation claims, and thus countered the efforts by public officials to use these claims to suppress political criticism.
