Montgomery County

This is a church in Silver Spring, with the people standing out front.

And here are some pictures from that church, posted by Ana Sol Gutierrez on Facebook today:

Don't let this become normal.

Montgomery County church vandalized with racist, pro-Trump writing

"SILVER SPRING, Md. (ABC7) — A church in Silver Spring Maryland was vandalized with racists statements in support of Donald Trump Saturday night.

According to church officials, the phrase "Trump Nation whites only" was written at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior at 1700 Powder Mill Road on a sign advertising the church's Hispanic service and on a wall in the church's memorial garden which serves as the church cemetery.

"I guess none of us realized where we were living," says Margaret Gordon, a member of the church's vestry.

According to Robert Harvey The Rector of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, about 80 percent of the church's members are immigrants and there are people from more than 50 countries of origin as part of his congregation.

"They're afraid," says Harvey who also says that this was not the first such incident of racism in the community during the week.

Harvey says that on Thursday, he confronted two white men who were harassing and yelling racial slurs at a Latina woman at a Value Village across the street from the church.

"We believe we have work to do to help bring peace and reconciliation," says Harvey.

"This is a different reality for us," says Gordon. "So maybe it's a good place to start where we can pray for people like that."

OK, so seriously, Jim and Cyn. I think you both live in MC.

So do I. I also get out and about. I'm all over the county to various places all week long. There are some places I go where whites are a minority. Yet, I don't see any of this anywhere. This is either a lie or professionals hired by someone to create a false impression.

Honestly, I never meet anyone here in MC who supported Trump.

Tell me truthfully. Have either of you?

I know perpetuating racial divisiveness has been a technique for liberal political manipulation. But the limbo routine is getting old. How low can you go?

My guess is that these liberal convulsions are manifestations of a concern that, with Trump getting in the White House, minorities will discover that he has their best interest in mind. In 2020, look for the Trump share of the minority vote to go way up.

You are wrong about where I live. I have worked in MC for two and a half decades, but I live in one of MD's red counties. There are no Clinton signs in my neighborhood, only Trump signs. In some white neighborhoods, Confederate flags have been flying for years.

A mixed race family used to rent the house across the street from me, but the owner moved back in with her new beau a few years ago. A black family used to live in the house next to me, but they moved away a couple years ago too.

I don't know why they moved out. But they have reason to be afraid here. About 2 years ago I came home from work very late, and had to stop just a couple of miles from my house because there was a car stopped in the middle of my lane.

I got out to see what was going on and found it was 4 (5?) young black ladies heading home after a party. The driver had stopped because she had a flat tire - let left front rim was only separated from the ground by rubber - no air. I told her it was dangerous to leave the car in the middle of the road, and that she needed to pull it off to the side and I would help her change her tire.

After pulling the car into the grass, she started pulling stuff out of her trunk to get the spare. While waiting I looked around some more. Her back left tire was completely flat too. Upon looking closer I found a 1 inch wide stab wound in the sidewall of each flat tire. I told her to stop pulling stuff out of her trunk - she wasn't going anywhere with just one spare.

She argued with me that one spare was good enough for her to get home (to the other side of town) but I finally convinced her that was a bad idea. As it was, she needed two new tires. With her plan, she would also need a new rim.

I offered to take her and her friends home, but they weren't going to fit easily in my tiny little hybrid. The opted instead to have me take them back to their friends at the party. We didn't get all the way back there though. In the dark, walking in our direction, were their friends - 4 or 5 young black men. They had me stop and let them out. Their friends' vehicle had two slashed tires as well.

I have no idea who slashed all those tires, but this part of the county is about 95% white.

Some twenty years ago I came home from my weekend grocery run to find a thin black man standing at the bottom of my drive way. He had blood all over his legs, and seemed a bit "out of it." It was a hot summer day, and he had only shorts, sweat, and sneakers on. He might have been suffering from heat exhaustion and or blood loss. He was very defensive and quickly put up his fists. I offered to help.

I got him a couple of very large glasses of water, which he gulped down quickly. I also got him a cloth and some antiseptic to clean off his legs. Fortunately it looked like it was a lot of superficial woulds that you might get from running through sticker bushes, rather than a life-threatening gash.

I talked him into letting me take him to the hospital, and we headed toward town. He changed his mind though and had me drop him off at the shopping center.

I came back home and saw neighbors in their yard, so I went to ask them if they knew what happened. They said "no" and asked if I knew the guy. I said "no" too. They said they were "ready for him though - we have our guns out."

I just had one of those head-shaking, eye-popping, WTF?!?!" moments. I'm glad I got to him before they did. Keep in mind, no one in my neighborhood comes across as an outright racist.

Racism is usually invisible to the person who holds it, Theresa. For instance, those who oppose Islam today, just like 1930s Germans who opposed Judaism, feel that they are rational, good people who are opposed to bad people who want to harm them. Trump's followers believe their stereotypes are facts.

You may even remember back when some people in Montgomery County had some negative stereotypes of LGBT people. They would not have described themselves as homophobic.

Do you have any evidence to support this assertion? We know there are right wingers who will dress up like women to perpetuate their bathroom perv meme. It's no surprise that they assume everyone else is as at least as devious as they are.

In a country of over 300 million people, there is the risk that a tiny fraction of what is going on is staged. I'm willing to bet though that the VAST majority of these racist, anti-muslim, and other attacks are coming from exactly where we expect it to come from - the Great Orange Basket of Deplorable.

Of course, if even 1% of these are staged by the left, expect the right to use it to dismiss the other 99% of the real ones.

It's part and parcel of their strategy to ignore the real issues and shift the blame to someone else. That's the Party of Responsibility for you.

Trump is probably going to be mired in scandals throughout his presidency. There are currently 75 lawsuits against him pending including for raping a 13 year old girl. He's the most corrupt person ever to be president. I think odds are even that he'll be impeached before his four years are up. This is the best case scenario for liberals.

Liberals most certainly aren't concerned that Trump has their best interests at heart. He's deeply indebted to Republican racists and religious extremists who will demand payback from him for their past and future support. Trump will happily throw minorities under the bus to please his racist and theocratic supporters.

Trump has promised to appoint supreme court justices who will overturn marriage equality. He has promised to help pass the euphemistically named "First Amendment Defence Act" which will void any anti-discrimination laws protecting LGBT people from discrimination and allow all christian businesses and people to discriminate against LGBT people but not vice versa. Trump was convicted of refusing to rent properties to black people - when someone tells you who they are, believe them.

Liberals would be thrilled to death if Trump had minorities best interests at heart but we're under no delusions that that is going to happen in any way.

How very tolerant of you Priya.

Look.
I took my mom to a Trump rally. The prevailing sentiment among the folks is that enough is enough !

Enough of the not enforcing our border and the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants that we can't afford.

Montgomery county just raised property taxes by 10% to pay for all the illegals in our schools. ESOL classes are 5x what they used to be and 75% of those classes are kids here illegally (who don't hesitate to admit it).....

Term limits passed in blue blue MC by 69% ... it wasn't even close !

BCC decided that they couldn't have a classic homecoming court this year .. it had to be gender neutral !

The IRAN deal, the illegal pay to play in the clinton foundation, the advertising for folks to pretend Trump groped them on Craigs list (you really should read Wikileaks).....

When you tell people like me who have worked my entire life and didn't quit work when my kids were little that you are going to tax that money away from me and give it to someone else who never made that sacrifice to pay for their kids college (when the reason I worked all those years was to be able to pay for MY KIDS COLLEGE)...

I am not the only person that finds that horribly unfair.

Most people find that horribly unfair.

You have thugs everywhere rioting and destroying property, disrespecting our police officers, shooting out police officers...

You have Kapernick who refuses to stand for the national anthem and then doesn't even bother to go vote !

The working class of America had finally had enough.

And they rose up. And there were prayer groups across the country praying and fasting on election day.

And Trump won.

Thank God.

Trump made a half-hearted statement opposing the now-hundreds of acts of bigotry, racism and violence against immigrants, gay people, blacks and others that his followers have targeted since the election, telling people to “stop it.” Of course he had to try to dismiss it by claiming it was just a tiny problem being exaggerated by the media. This is just like when he reluctantly and meekly rejected the endorsements of white supremacists weeks after being pressured to do so. Trump only rarely and reluctantly puts up the flimsiest of facades criticizing his extremist supporters and has to be pressured to do so by the media. Contrast this with both Clinton and Obama who immediately after the election asked their supporters to give Trump a chance to show he can do the job.

Irrelevant. Plus term limits aren't a good thing. They ensure that only inexperienced people hold office and that allows lobbyists to take advantage of them against the best interests of the people.

There never were any such Craigs list ads, more of the flood of lies from Republicans. There never was any pay to play in the Clinton foundation, its been investigated to death and if there was any wrongdoing it would have been uncovered by now. Now, the Trump foundation has been actually legally found to be a criminal enterprise that Trump uses to pay away his legal problems. The Iran deal has taken Iran from being less than a year away from having a nuclear weapon to being over ten years away - there is NOTHING to complain about with the Iran deal.

Oh, stop whining, most people certainly do not find that "unfair". The poor people you loathe can't afford to pay for their kid's college and this makes it more difficult for them to get out of poverty. You won the lottery by having parents pay for your college. You were born on third base and now you claim you hit a triple. Everyone pays taxes that goes to things they don't like. I paid thousands in property taxes half of which when to supporting schools for children I don't have, you don't hear me whining "that's unfair". No child has a right to have their college paid for. If you want to do that that's your choice, stop bitching about it and do it. actually Hillary didn't get more votes than Trump when you throw out the 3 million illegal votes by illegal aliens that they have already identified.

MC did absolutely just raise property taxes by 10% (actually it might have been 12%). What about that is a lie ? the claim that 10% of the kids in the schools are here illegally are based on a numbers from a SCHOOL TEACHER who teaches ESOL classes. So not a lie. The county council pointed to the expanding school population as the reason they had to raise property taxes. (while at the same time voting themselves a 30% raise). We managed to get 1/2 the extremely liberal county council removed in a on fell swoop. which was great.

Question for you Priya, if you offer free college to folks kids making less than 120K a year, and the only reason a couple makes over 120K a year is because both parents work ... why wouldn't that couple just get divorced or have one person quit ? Right now I am paying 47 percent in taxes by the time you add it all up. Hillary wanted to bring that number to 55% at which point we would practically have more take home income if one of us quit working because we don't get any of the deductions for the kids tuitions we pay. If Hillary had gotten elected, either my husband or I were going to quit. When you make taxes so punitive people will make different choices, and most people believe that the govt should NOT under any circumstances take more than 50% of someones income.

and obama changed the way deportations are counted, he started counting turnbacks not just deportations. So, no he has not enforced the borders at all. ICE is quoted as saying under Obama they felt like they were running a travel agency.

Theresa said "actually Hillary didn't get more votes than Trump when you throw out the 3 million illegal votes by illegal aliens that they have already identified.".

Stop with the lies already Theresa. In the past 10 years there's only been about 10 documented cases of illegal votes out of aproximately a billion votes cast. There is no widespread voter fraud and there certainly isn't 3 million illegal votes in the last election. And of course the idea that if any illegal voting goes on its all done by Democrat voters is absurd. The only two proven cases of illegal voting in this election were both people voting Republican.

On election night in 2012 before the votes were finished counting Trump went
on an inane Twitter tirade, claiming tweet after tweet that Romney had won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote and declaring this the death of democracy and a cause for a revolution.

I guarantee you, if Clinton had won the election and gotten fewer votes than Trump Republicans would have been rioting in the street.

Theresa said "MC did absolutely just raise property taxes by 10% (actually it might have been 12%). What about that is a lie ?"

I never said that was a lie. Once again, your standard debating tactic is to accuse your opponent of saying things they didn't and taking positions they don't.

Theresa said "the claim that 10% of the kids in the schools are here illegally are based on a numbers from a SCHOOL TEACHER who teaches ESOL classes. So not a lie.".

An unsubstantiated assertion by a single person. There's no reason to believe that's true, and even if it was, it certainly wouldn't prove that 10% of kids in MC schools are there illegally. You went to university, you should be smart enough to know this. Of course you are, but truth doesn't matter to you.

That's the difference between you and I Theresa. You say I can never convince you you're wrong even if I'm telling the truth. On the other hand I'm open to believing I'm wrong, you can convince me I'm wrong (but you won't do it with a barrage of lies).

Theresa repeats this lie regularly. I don't recall exactly how she comes up with this 47% figure, but it was something along the lines of taking all the income tax her husband pays, adding that to all the income tax she pays and then calculating that as 47% of her income. In truth she and her husband pay less than a 30% tax rate and possibly much less.

And as far as the claim that Hillary was going to boost her taxes to 55%, that's a lie too. Its well documented that Hillary proposed raising taxes on those with a combined family income of more than $250,000 and lowing them on families that made less than $250,000. Theresa and her husband's combined income is around $200,000 a year.

Theresa, if Hillary had been elected you'd be paying less tax than you are now and there's a good chance you WOULD have been able to deduct your children's college tuition from your income if it was not paid for entirely.

There's nothing but a barrage of lies from Theresa.

USA Today reports:

Churches vandalized with Trump-inspired slurs

"INDIANAPOLIS — St. David's Episcopal Church in Bean Blossom was vandalized sometime Saturday night.

Vandals painted tags on the walls, depicting a swastika, an anti-gay slur and "Heil Trump."

And in Silver Spring, Md., a sign advertising the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour's Spanish-language service also was vandalized Saturday night, according to the communications team at the church.

The sign was cut in several different places and the words “Trump nation. Whites only.” were written on the back and on the wall of the parish’s memorial garden.

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of Episcopal Diocese of Washington gathered with church members and priests to stand in solidarity at the church in the wake of this incident.

In Indiana, the Rev. Kelsey Hutto, priest in charge at St. David's Episcopal Church, said she was disheartened after finding the graffiti on the walls of the church Sunday morning. But her next thought was more positive.

"Well, we must be doing something right," Hutto said she thought. "We stated one time that doing the right thing was not always the popular thing. We were targeted for a reason, and in our mind it was for a good reason."

As Christians, Hutto said they need to respond to hateful acts with love and joy. That's what God calls on them to do, no matter what color people are, where they came from or who they love.

They just need to respect the differences of every human being, she said.

Since Election Day, there have been more than 200 incidents of hateful harassment and intimidation across the country, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. And the rise in hate crimes since the election appears to be worse than what happened after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, said Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The vandalism at the church, about 25 miles south of Indianapolis, comes days after students in vice president-elect Mike Pence's hometown taunted other students by chanting "build that wall."

Hutto said there is no doubt the atmosphere in the country has changed since President-elect Donald Trump and his running mate, Pence, were elected on Tuesday.

"But what we really need to focus on is not the election, but rather the fact that love conquers all hate," Hutto said. "Anytime hate is presented, love needs to be our response. That's how we're responding."..."

Theresa said "Theresa said "the claim that 10% of the kids in the schools are here illegally are based on a numbers from a SCHOOL TEACHER who teaches ESOL classes. So not a lie.".

Let's unpack this a little further. First, this is an unsubstantiated claim about an alleged teacher of english as a second language. Even if it were true that 10% of the students in her ESL class were there illegally, the vast majority of Montgomery county students don't take ESL classes. For the sake of argument, let's assume generously that 10% of Montgomery county students take ESL. That means 10% of 10% of students, or 1%, are there illegally IF this one ESL class was representative of the entire population of montgomery county students and it most assuradly WOULD NOT BE as any beginning student of statistics could tell you and Theresa is also well aware of.

This is the sort of absurd distortions, unsubstantiated assertions, and outright lies Theresa relies on to make her claims.

look at this, MCPS website :

Students receiving free & reduced-price meals (FARMS): 36.6%
Students ever receiving FARMS: 43.3%
English for speakers of other languages (ESOL): 14.2%
Students receiving special education services: 11.7%

14%.

clearly my friend doesn't know the exact percentage of the folks that are here illegally - and the county won't release that information either. But, my friend says that most of the kids in the ESOL classes are here illegally and they talk about it in class. Openly. all the time.
The vast majority are here illegally.

AND.
these kids have come from Honduras and other central american places where they have had very little prior education... like 2 hours a day before. they are typically staying with extended family.
because they left their own families to come to america because our president told them that if they got here they could stay.

so okay, let's assume that is it only 60% of the ESOL classes that are here illegally. our BOE won't give us those numbers, which would make it easier.

.6 *. 14 is 8.5 %.

Property tax raise - 8.7%.

HMMMM.

yes, my property taxes were just raised to pay for the school overcrowding, expansion and construction.

They were raised to pay for Montgomery County liberal policies of letting illegals flood our county.

And it's my money. I worked for it. I don't want to hear this "you can afford it crap" as if you were continually entitled to stick your hands in my pockets and pull out funds you are not entitled to.... However, there is some joy in the County Council finding out what happens when they vote us a big tax hike and themselves a big raise... the voters sent them packing. which is as it should be.

Finally Priya, 47% - 22% federal, 10% MD, 6% SS, 3% Medicare, about another 3% in property taxes and sales taxes of 6% (though that is not on everything clearly).
44% before sales tax of 6%

It is an outrageous amount.

Have a nice evening.

Too bad there aren't more gay Latinas and Latinos - there wouldn't be as many kids needing education and tax dollars then.

Until we start putting the white people who hire illegals in jails, they are going to keep coming. Your tax dollars are helping support illegal business activity, and our political class likes to keep it that way. The Republicans keep blaming the illegals themselves to distract you from the real issue, and you bought it up hook line and sinker.

Businesses have a cheap, underpaid workforce they can hire, fire, and intimidate at will, and it is subsidised by the US taxpayer, which further helps their bottom line.

Personally, I want to see as many of these kids go on to college as possible. College educated people will pay their education costs many times over. Those with little or no education will like be a drain.

If you don't like the taxes and policies here in MD, there are 49 other states you are welcome to move to. Some of them don't even have income taxes! Sounds great, right? Sure, but they all still have to balance their state budgets somehow. It may be sales tax, gas tax, property tax, or investment taxes, but they'll find a way to get the money from you. You don't get somethin' for nothin' babe.

You never seem to mention all the great thing you get from those taxes - like some of the best-maintained roads in the country. I've been to a lot of places that had not seen a new layer of asphalt in well over a decade - yeah they didn't spend a lot of taxes on roads, so you got to spend that money on new tires and suspension components. Great compromise.

MC also consistently has some of the best schools in the country. That takes money too, as does the police force that keeps your neighborhood safe. Depending on which city you libve in, they treat all of your sewage, and monitor air quality, and maintain the traffic cameras that we can view to prepare for our daily commute.

Keep in mind that our taxes also support a military that is 8.4 times larger than one would expect it to be given our population (4.4% of world population, 37% of world military spending). And Republicans keep wanting to spend more on that. Also, that figure does NOT include what we spend on the Department of Homeland Security that Bush created, and cost $41.2 Billion this year, and the VA, which requested $182.3 Billion for 2017.

There are places in the world you can live with very little taxes - but then you have to put up with things like no schools, few job opportunities, and an open sewer running in front of your house. I recommend checking them out. You might just find the right place for you.

A number pulled out of your friends butt. No doubt she's a lying Republican just like you. Your friend has no way of knowing what percentage are there illegally, if any. There's no way that even close to all of the students in that class are there illegally. And once again, there's no way you can draw generalizations from one english as a second language class to all english as a second language classes - you went to university, you know this, stop lying.

Theresa said "Finally Priya, 47% - 22% federal, 10% MD, 6% SS, 3% Medicare, about another 3% in property taxes and sales taxes of 6% (though that is not on everything clearly) 44% before sales tax of 6%".

Theresa, when you lie so frequently why should I believe any of your claims about how much tax you pay?

Its been close to twenty years since I had any significant income to do a tax return on but I do recall that the taxes you pay are not on your entire income (there are many deductions), so right off the bat you're lying about what percentage of your income you pay in taxes. Perhaps Cynthia can correct me on this if I'm wrong but I think your state tax is payable on the taxable income minus federal income tax and social security and medicare are included in the 22% federal tax you claim to pay

Theresa said "And it's my money. I worked for it. I don't want to hear this "you can afford it crap" as if you were continually entitled to stick your hands in my pockets and pull out funds you are not entitled to....".

Stop whining, you can well afford it. If you want to live in a society that provides you with roads, schools, water, sewage, police and fire protection, social security, medicare, and on and on you can damn well pay for it. Society is most certainly entitled to "stick its hands in your pockets and pull out funds it is entitled to" for the things it provides you in return. People like you who have benefited the most from society deserve to pay a larger share of the burden. You live a lavish and extravagant lifestyle compared to most Americans and you do so BY CHOICE. You've made your bed of greed, now lie in it and stop bitching.
